Why does แทรก begin with an "s"?

Postby LeifNZ » Wed Feb 24, 2021 10:09 pm

Hi all: my first post! Hope I'm in the right place.

Can anyone tell me why แทรก starts with an "S" sound rather than a "TR"?

Thanks!!

There is probably an answer to your question but I am satisfied that whenever you see ทร with a vowel then it is treated as if it appears in a Thai word. Tractor, trainer, trumpet and probably more English words are spelt with ทร too.

Thanks for posting, Leif. Almost all Thai words which contain the consonant cluster "ทร" are pronounced as if they were "" [as an initial "s" sound]. Some foreign words that begin with "tr-" are being transcribed into Thai orthography as "ทร". Such words include "ทริป" [trip] and "ทรู" [true]. See, for example the communications company "ทรู มูฟ" [True Move].

Hi LeifNZ,

seems to be a question about computer?

My spontaneous answer would be:

แทรก starts (left hand side) with an "Ä" sound rather than a THR!

Initialy I was also wondering that that 1 minute is a long time ago.

An educated guess: Time zones?!

Is NZ a hint on time zones?

(Just passing by)

Hi, Leif
Hmm..let me put it this way: there are silent k and g in English, right? This is the other way around.
As Tgeezer and David mentioned, some Thai words have to be pronounced two alphabets at the same time which sometimes sound different from the original alphabets.
While you pronounce "knight" the same sounds as "night", the other way around is you have to pronounce both "k" and "n" at the same time (like "true"). And that's close to what you asked, but there's still a bit (if not big) difference here.
As David pointed out, "ทร" are pronounced as if they were "" (s sound, not tr which is so different from its original or there's no original sound left at all).
Anyway, some words are still pronounced not so different from the original. For example, กราบ. It still keeps the sound of "" and "", like ทรู (true).

Hope this doesn't make you more confuse.

Thanks everyone.
I understand that there will be the odd glitch in the language matrix here and there.
NZ is New Zealand.

Thanks
