I used หน่อย when I should have used น้อย today, and while my husband corrected me and the difference made perfect sense during the thirty seconds or so he was explaining it, it hasn't really stuck. I looked in the dictionary, but it the definitions weren't nuanced enough for me to figure out when to use one and not the other (plus, they're both the same part of speech, which doesn't help my brain tell the difference). Perhaps someone could explain it more clearly for me and maybe even provide a few example sentences?

Hmmm your post made me realize I don't really know the difference neither... I used น้อย for "a bit / ไม่มาก" and หน่อย for ช่วยหน่อย etc. as some kind of particle that makes it sound nicer

Might be helpful to regard น้อย as to be used with measurable, quantifiable things: size, dimension, quantity.

หน่อย is unquantifiable: e.g., "a bit," "somewhat," and is used to soften the meaning of a command or request.

Mangkorn did a great job in explaining the difference between these two words whose meaning is close but who uses are very different. Here is how the Royal Institute dictionary explains the two words:

หน่อย ว. นิดหนึ่ง, น้อยหนึ่ง, ไม่มาก, เช่น ขอหน่อย เดินอีกหน่อยก็ถึง; ประเดี๋ยว,
ไม่ช้า, ไม่นาน, เช่น รอหน่อย กินเหล้ามาก ๆ อีกหน่อยก็ตาย.

Isn't นัอย an adverb in this context?
