Additional spacing rules.

Postby RanE » Wed Feb 03, 2016 4:41 am

Hello. I've got more questions about Thai.

1. Do you use single quotation marks for indicating what people think?
ex) "You are so dumb." (Talking)
'You too!' (Thinking)

2. Do you use single quotation marks same as English? One of usage of them is [When a quote is used within a quote, single quotation marks are used.]
In this case, what about the spacing? which exmaple is correct?
a) "He said 'immediately'" (no space between the single and double quotation mark at the end)
b) "He said 'immediately' " (1 space between the single and double quotation mark at the end)

3. How do you give spacing for ellipses? which example is correct?
ex1) if there are 3 sentences A, B, C, B is ommited.
a) A...C
b) A ... C
c) A... C
d) others

ex2) If there are 3 words A, B, C. B is ommited.
a) A...C
b) A ... C
c) A... C
d) others

Thanks very much for your answer.

Brackets, , question marks, quotation marks, if they exist in Thai, it is because they exist in English, choose to use them in Thai, then you can't be wrong if you follow English rules.

If you look at serialised stories in magazines, e.g. Cheewit Rak, you'll find lots of punctuation marks.

And if you read Thai language textbooks because they draw on English.
Comparing a book of Aesop's fables there are masses of quotation marks but just glancing through some original Thai books "มารยาทไทย"is one I have to hand, there is no English punctuation.
