How is 'for' in this sense expressed in Thai?

Are เพื่อ and สำหรับ interchangeable, or not? For my novice learning, I have seperated เพื่อ to mean 'for' and สำหรับ to mean 'in order to/that'.

เพื่อ and สำหรับ might be able to used interchangeable in some cases. But I can't think of one now.

From my example;

It's difficult for me - มันยาก สำหรับ ผม

You can't use เพื่อ in this sentence.

If I do something for you, I would use เพื่อ.

But if I have something for you, I would use สำหรับ.

If something or someone + adjective + for + someone or something, then สำหรับ is used.

For examples;

คุณเป็นคนน่ารักสำหรับผม

การออกกำลังกายดีสำหรับสุขภาพ

I bought a book for you ผมซื้อหนังสือเพื่อคุณ

Are these attempts of mine correct? If so, I do not really understand the difference as "bought" and "have" are both verbs and the other words are the same.

In that case, perhaps another verb, "to give," would be in order?

This is a great question regarding the difference between สำหรับ and เพื่อ

My experience is that สำหรับ is most often used as a preposition, whereas เพื่อ is used as a conjunction or introductory adverb for a clause. Here is Lexitron:

Sample: " สำหรับ ประเทศไทยแล้ว การพัฒนาทางด้านเทคโนโลยีนั้นยังต้องพัฒนาอีกมาก"

However, from the well-known folk song “งามแสงเดือน” comes this line:

เราเล่นกัน เพื่อ สนุก เปลื้องทุกข์วายระกำ
We play together for fun; to dispel suffering and to bring sorrow to an end.

And in a like manner, I believe that Mangkorn is correct when he points out the Thai sentence, “การออกกำลังกาย เพื่อ สุขภาพ”

I would like to offer the following supposition for consideration: the two sentences quoted are really shorthand for:

เราเล่นกันเพื่อ ให้มีความ สนุก สนาน

กำลังกายเพื่อ ให้มี สุขภาพ แข็งแรง

The upshot is that เพื่อ is still a conjunction or relative adverb but in certain cases the usage is within a shortened framework. What do you think?

Actually, the better translation for both sentences should be - ผมซื้อหนังสือให้คุณ and ผมมีหนังสือให้คุณ.

As for ผมซื้อหนังสือเพื่อคุณ, it might be used in the sentence like 'I bought this book for your benefit, such as, I would read it in order to understand you more'. It doesn't need that he bought it and give it to you.

ผมมีหนังสือสำหรับคุณ - I have a book (which you're supposed to read because it might help you on something you are in trouble with right now) for you.

I think it's the same as other languages which one word might have some unsaid specific meaning but it implies that meaning from context and situation.

In that sense, I've also heard สำหรับ used to mean something like "according to..."; "as far as I am/you are concerned..." - which implicitly acknowledges that other opinions may exist.

ก็สวยสำหรับคุณ - "You think I'm pretty (but I'm not so sure...)"
