เช่น

Aural and oral characteristics of the Thai language

เช่น

Postby insayt » Tue Jul 22, 2014 5:49 pm

Hi!

I looking at the list of words in "Words with Irregular Pronunciation"

How about เช่น, shouldn't it be in there too? When I listen to for example http://www.thai-language.com/id/208016, it sounds short!

Thank you!

Many words with falling tone appear short to me although the vowals themselves do not imply it - dunno if it's just me or if this is normal haha

Richard Wordington, I believe, has discussed this phenomenon before and concluded, if I recall correctly, that the full method of writing words like this would compound two marks about the relevant consonant:

เช็่น

Apparently, Thais decided that the use of the ไม้เอก alone would suffice to represent both sound indicators.

Thank you all!

But about my question, as for me it sounds short like many in that list, เก่ง, เฉ่ง, เล่น, เช้ง and so on..., so maybe เช่น should be in that list too or does it differ in any way from the other?

เก่ง, เฉ่ง, เล่น, and เช่น are some syllables or words of the short vowel -.

เช้ง is a syllable or word of the long vowel -.

Thank you very much Khun Pirin, appreciate your help!
