Hi Luzine,

For two years ago, on a 2 weeks holiday in Thailand, I felt like I was missing something because I couldn't understand the language nor communicate with the locals. I decided to learn Thai.
Back home, I bought a book "Colloquial Thai" by John Moore&Saowalak Rodchue. "The Complete Course for Beginners" as they put it.
Soon enough, I realised the book is a joke because everything -nearly- is written in so called "transliteration". I wrote to the authors and complained about this telling them how frustrated and cheated I felt. They replied saying they were sorry but they wanted only to help!
To help? One example: "Sùphachai: khun maa meuang thai tham-mai kráp?" Lol! What kind of help is this for someone who wants to study Thai? Moreover my main language isn't English, and as the book wouldn't use phonetic caracters, it became obvious to me I had just wasted my money.
Lyckily enough, I've found some interesting courses on the net like "Maanii Readers" or "thailanguagewiki.com".
I warmly recommend those two courses to students not having money (or time) to attend a special school or to afford a teacher
Now, in "thailanguagewiki", I read the following sentence "...หลังบ้านเป็นนา". I wonder, shouldn't be "...หลังบ้านมีนา".

The meanings of the two sentences are the same. The use of the word เป็น in this case is good, colloquial Thai.

Hi David&Bui,

Here I come again! And this time, my problem is purely "technical" which is not your cup of tea, I know, but I'm so desperate that I go and knock on every door I see!
One of my favorite Thai courses online is prodived by SEASITE(www.seasite.niu.edu/Thai). Lessons like in Maanii Readers are well structured, but it is impossible to make useful exercises such as "Dictation, Matching and Flashcard ". Each time, it requires the installation of the Java program. I've just done that, yet the program wouldn't display " Dictation, the Matching nor Flashcard " for, it seems, reliability reasons.
I do know many Thai students use this course and I wonder if by chance some of them have got in touch with you or have encountered similar problems. Any piece of advice will help.
