"ภาคภูมิใจ"

Postby David and Bui » Tue May 07, 2019 2:18 am

An anonymous member of this forum sent a note to the T-L.com gmail account asking about the pronunciation of "ความภาคภูมิใจ" (pride).
Elements are "ภาคภูมิใจ" and "ภูมใจ". The question he asked is whether the element should be pronounced "ภูม-มิ-ใจ" or "ภูม-ใจ".

The online Royal Society Dictionary provides no guidance. However, the พจนานุกรมฉบับมติชน, First Edition, 2004, page 654, shows that the pronunciation is "พาก-พูม" and "ภูม-ใจ" respectively. I infer that the full word is pronounced ""พาก-พูม-ใจ".

Other Thai words do have the vowel pronounced. The word "ภูมิภาค", for example, is pronounced "ภู-มิ-พาก".

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Me too. I was just looking for some authority on the matter.

A number of Thai words drop the final vowel sound in a syllable, including ชาติ ("ชาด") and เหตุ ("เหด").

That's a P/S compound, so the sara i is no longer word final. Therefore it gets pronounced.
