I'm using the free Thai Typing Tutor tool to improve my Thai typing. One of the things you can do is import your own .txt files and use them as lessons. However, it seems that the .txt files are in ASCII format, and I cannot figure out how to convert my Thai script files to ASCII. I basically need to turn it into something like this:

You're referring to TIS-620 format, in which the text you demonstrated appears as Thai when used with the DBTT.TTF ("DB ThaiText") font .

To convert unicode Thai text to this format, use my XTIS620 program which is available here: http://www.thai-language.com/ref/thai-text-utilities

Press the --> TIS-620 button to get text in that format.

So I have another question. I'm on an XP machine here. I have a bunch of files that have the Thai titles in Unicode format. I use the program Glenn posted and the text shows up in Thai text. However, when I then copy that text and try to paste it to the file as the new file name, nothing happens - the Unicode remains. I'm not sure if it's a file permission issue or something else. Does anyone have any suggestions?

As you describe it, those filenames are *not* in unicode format. If you just pasted text into my converter program, then copied it back, you did not convert it from TIS-620 (which is what it actually is there, apparently) to Unicode. You need to press the [--> Unicode] button first, then copy it. Then you can give the files proper Unicode names, which will be visible throughout the operating system (except in the DOS box).

You might have been confused by the fact that the converter program displays TIS-620 by using the DBTT font, so the Thai is visible (but this is not Unicode). When a file's name is encoded in this way, there's no way for Windows XP to know that it's Thai versus some other (language) encoding.

It's also worth having a Unicode-friendly text editor in your box of Thai-language tools.

I use BabelPad, and it never puts a foot wrong whether it is pasting Thai text from a web site or Word doc or sending it in the other direction.

Free, always armed with the latest Unicode standard, and only a couple of megabytes download.

I can't figure out how to use it. It's very confusing. I just want to paste in the unicode and get an answer. Glenn's program does this perfectly; I just can't seem to get Windows to change it for some reason.
