Several years ago I purchased a "Sony" memory card in Bangkok. When put in my camera it turned out to be fake.
What word would I use to describe it "ปลอม" or "เทียม"?

I would say that the meaning of 'เทียม' is close to that of 'artificial' -- "made or produced to copy something natural; not real", but the meaning of 'ปลอม' is "(disapproving) not genuine", which means fake.
