Office 2013 Proofing Tools

Postby David and Bui » Mon Jan 21, 2013 3:40 pm

Microsoft Office 2013 is now available for download, both the purchase and on a 60-day trial basis. Although this version is designed or Windows 8, it is also at home on Windows 7. "Proofing Tools" now includes a Thai language spelling dictionary if you choose to add it.

I will be using this spelling dictionary to assess its usefulness. So far I have seen that foreign language words are not natively included in the dictionary, for example, errors show for "อินทราเนต" (intranet), "สมาร์ทการ์ด" (smartcard), and "ปลดล็อก" (to solve a problem). You can, however, add words to the dictionary if they are not already included. And, the use of one dictionary does not preclude the use of another; you can use both the English and Thai spell checker at the same time.

You can download a Thai definitional dictionary for Office also. In its application in Word, the dictionary provides definitions in Thai, as well as a sample sentence in Thai. The dictionary is and I will be testing this out over time.

You can add Thai as a proofing language by accessing File>Options>Word Option>Language>[Add additional editing language].

Any thoughts?

I was also pleasantly surprised when I saw that they added free Proofing Tools for every language. I did test Thai out just for a second and I don't think I possess the skills to judge about it so far. Maybe in a few years.

How did you install the dictionary for word? Or did I misunderstand this point?

From the Help section:

"Install a dictionary

Instead of starting with a built-in dictionary, Word 2013 links you to the Office Store so you can pick a free dictionary or buy one from a collection, including dictionaries in many languages.

To choose and install the dictionary you want, right-click any word and click Define.

Sign in if you’re prompted to, and look over the choices in the Dictionaries list, and then click Download to install the dictionary you want.

After it downloads, the dictionary will open automatically in Word. From then on it will open whenever you click Define.

Install another dictionary

Once you’ve downloaded one dictionary, go to the Office Store if you want more"
