Cheek Kissing

Postby David and Bui » Tue Nov 20, 2012 4:27 pm

Cheek kissing is very common in France.

Question: What action is "หอมแก้ม" in Thailand? Is it sniffing with the nose or pecking with the lips? Seems to me that in Thailand it is the former, in Europe, the latter.

What do you think?

Hi David !
Kissing women on the cheek is common in France between people who are not close friends.
We will generally shake hands the first time and kiss later on..

I think that the real Thai หอมแก้ม should be compared to kissing on the lips, but they use the term for the common French greeting.

Please look at this thread :

http://topicstock.pantip.com/lumpini/to ... 24960.html

Then, in French, to kiss = "embrasser" (embrace), which etymologically means "to take in one's arm".
So that when we say "embrasser sur la bouche" = to kiss on the lips, it is a real nonsense...

How would you characterize these: หอมแก้ม or จูบ ?

David, I just got the answer from a Thai friend after sending her your pictures :

We were invited to visit the long-neck village in MaeHongSon with a Thai friend of one of the women in that village. They've been friends for many years. When we were ready to leave, the woman gave our friend a cheek 'kiss'.....very sincere......I was lucky to catch it in a photo. No puckering or smacking of the lips, nothing returned by the man to the woman.....but seemed to be a true sign of friendship/love.
It's what I've used as an example of แหมแก้ม
