Source to understand current political situation

Postby tstatton » Sat May 29, 2010 12:17 am

Does anyone know a good source in Thai, a book or author, or journal, blog, etc. which would explain what is going on politically? As a long-time follower of Thailand, I am not sure why things have become more volatile or whether it is an economic, political, or even regional issue.

For minute by minute reports:

Follow the "Thailand Live Today" thread and its postings at http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Thailand- ... s-f18.html

You can read local foreigner reaction to these events in the related threads.

For analysis of various stripes see:

http://asiapacific.anu.edu.au/newmandal ... /thailand/ (fairly left-leaning)

News and analysis at http://www.nationmultimedia.com/home/index.php
http://www.bangkokpost.com/
for example: http://www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opin ... ing-within

http://www.economist.com/world/asia/ for example:

Foreign Policy: http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2 ... n_thailand

Obviously, The New York Times, CNN, and the BBC have been following events.
For example: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/24/world ... and&st=cse and http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/25/opini ... %22&st=cse

Blogs and twitters to follow include:

Thanks, David. They were great sources. I went through those and made bookmarks and twitter feeds and have a better understanding. Most of those were in English. Do you have one or two that are in Thai, a newspaper perhaps, that is fairly moderate or analytical or a blog ,so that I could improve my Thai at the same time. I sure hope I can get back to Thailand at some point. Thanks. :)

Here are some Thai newspapers:

The Matichon Online newspaper [มติชน]: http://www.matichon.co.th/index.php
Matichon Weekly news magazine [มติชนดสัปดาห์] (subscription required): http://info.matichon.co.th/weekly/
The Nation Weekly news magazine [เนชันสุดสัปดาห์] (subscription required): http://www.nationweekend.com/home/
Thai Rath daily newspaper [ไทยรัฐ]: http://www.thairath.co.th/
Thai Post daily newspaper [ไทยโพสต์]: http://www.thaipost.net/
Khom Chat Luk [คม ชัด ลึก] newspaper: http://www.komchadluek.net/
Manager Online [ผู้จัดการ]: http://www.manager.co.th/home/

I happen to like the two weekly magazines but you have to pay for them and the on-line price is only marginally less expensive than the newsstand price. However, you can download text versions of the articles, paste them into Word, find vocabulary easily in electronic dictionaries, and use them as reading lessons.

Manager Online, and its television subsidiary ASTV, are the house organs of the Yellow Shirts or พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตย. Take what you see with a grain of salt.

The most popular newspaper in Thailand is Thai Rath. Reading this paper will give you a view of the news which Thai people are seeing.

Best of luck.

Another popular daily is the Daily News (เดลินิวส์) which is easily identifiable by its lurid vermilion (actually, it may be nearer to 'wild strawberry') color scheme. It has good international sports coverage, a propensity for gory news, and I find its headline font a bit easier than Thai Rath.

Sorry, Rick is correct. This is a very popular source of news for the Thais. The website is at http://www.dailynews.co.th/newstartpage/index.cfm

Thanks, Rick.

It is true that Thai Rat, and the Daily News, have the biggest readership.

But they sure do tend toward the sublime old Thai adage:

นั่งเทียนเขียนข่าว

One should read everything out there, certainly. But as a serious journalist, I put my money on Matichon, and Matichon Weekly.

I agree with Khun Mangkorn. :D

But don't forget about "Manager Online" which we call "Manager all lies".

And, Khom Chat Luk [คม ชัด ลึก](sharp, clear, deep) - ทื่อ มัว ตื้น (dull, dim, shallow) too. :D
