brainstorm

Postby meythai » Tue Jul 22, 2014 12:41 pm

ชอบสุมกัน ซุมกัน i'm really not sure how it is spelled or if it a central thai word, or if there is a diacritical mark above it, but my understanding is that it means to put heads together or to have fun together or to brainstorm. I live in lampang - it could be a northern word. any ideas?

Khun Pirin,

If for nefarious purposes, can we use "ซูเอี๋ย" as at http://www.thai-language.com/id/148856 ?

The word can be found in the Royal Institute's "Dictionary of New Words, Volume 2"

"ซูเอี๋ย ก. แอบตกลงสมยอมกัน เช่น คุณจะสอบสวนยังไงก็ไม่ได้ความจริงหรอก เพราะสองคนนั้นเขาซูเอี๋ยกัน (. ว่า ไม่แพ้ไม่ชนะ)."

My attempt at translation:
". . . . verb. To make a secret agreement or connive together. Sample sentence. ‘No matter how much you try to interrogate them, you will not obtain the truth because the two of them have formed a secret pact.' "

"สุมหัวนินทาเจ้านาย"
"[They] have their heads together gossiping about their boss."

สมยอมกันในการเสนอราคาเพื่อมุ่งหมายมิให้มีการแข่งขันราคาอย่างเป็นธรรม.
"[They] are plotting to fix prices with the objective of stifling free and fair competition."

Do I understand these sentences correctly? Thanks.

"[They] are plotting to fix prices with the objective of preventing competitive bidding."
"[They] are plotting to fix prices with the objective of preventing a fair bidding process."

Is this a better reflection of the Thai sentence? Thanks.

การแข่งขันราคา is an alternative version of การประมูล.

What do people feel about เขาชอบ ?
I have a feeling that if you say 'they like' it excludes yourself and allows for a negative connotation.
