Later than that สายกว่านั้น (Take 2)

Postby Cerebrum » Tue Jan 26, 2016 5:41 pm

The first thread got sidetracked so I decided to post it again with some changes(notice the final นั้น now has a ไม้โท)

This sentence is from spoken language. I got it from the Pimsleur Thai audio course:

This is from Lesson/Unit 12, 4:30 into the lesson.
The whole sentence is:

สายกว่านั้นได้ไหมคะ "Later than that, ok?"
สายกว่านั้น means "later than that", right?

I'm concerned about the last word: นั้น H

I know there are several variations of "nan", so is this the correct one for that context?

According to the dictionary, entry 7 it can mean "at that time" so it makes sense to use it in a time context, right?

If your teacher says so, then the answer is yes.
You need to only glance at Facebook to see that There are many variations in the way people speak. No one wants to criticise how people speak so we make sense of it sometimes by calling it 'spoken language'. It is the language which most of 'us' speak because we are ignorant of the grammar.

Your course is teaching you how a Thai might express the English given.
The pronoun is นั่น in นั่นอะไร > if you start matching the words to English you are ' 'screwed'.
The reasoning for นั่น in นั่นอะไร is that it means that/those.
A whole new bag of worms is opened now because we see that อะไร is saying two things if we replace the words with English; อะไร serves as both noun and the question mark: that what? (what is that?)
สายกว่นั่น appears to have matched 'that' to นั่น in นั่นอะไร Pimsleur appears not to think that way.

Correct me if I am wrong but it looks as though in, "Later than that.", 'that' means 'that time' .
So สายกว่านั้น could mean that the noun เวลา is left out.

The loudest voice wins the argument and in your case it is your teacher, Pimsleur.

Sometimes you will see '?' in Thai, I imagine that becomes necessary when English and Thai match so well that '?' Is needed, something which I hope to avoid doing.
