Sooner or later

Postby Tgeezer » Sat Aug 13, 2016 7:04 am

Dictionaries show this to be equivalent to ไม่ช้าก็เร็ว do we agree?
I'm of the opinion that 'sooner or later' means that 'if not now then at some time in the future' .
ไม่ช้าก็เร็ว seems to say 'Not later but now' .
Does a native Thai speaker see 'sooner or later' as meaning, 'not later but now' .
Is there any cutural difference in how we perceive our fate? Does Thai culture feel that the future is not so important as the present, the opposite of Western culture.

Example: คนชั่วย่อมได้รับผลกรรมชั่ว ไม่ช้าก็เร็ว
Our fate, if it comes later, need not worry us so ไม่ช้าก็เร็ว says that it wont be delayed.
I wonder if this shows how, what we say doesn't matter, so long we say something people will interpret it their own way or the multi-lingual dictionary's way without coming to blows.

ไม่ช้าก็เร็ว does mean either later or now or at some time in the future.

Thanks Pirin, you must excuse me I am just musing; but it helps me to remember expressions. I never stop revising, even though I know that the theory doesn't matter I am still attracted to it.

คุณมีโอกาสที่จะเขียนข้อความนี้เป็นภาษาไทยได้เองอย่างสละสลวย ไม่ช้าก็เร็ว

How would you say "sooner than later" and "sooner rather than later"? Or are these the same thing? I'm not really an English speaker. :)
