Those who have studied a more traditional Indic script will understand the distinction between orthographic and phonetic syllables. For example, the word _buddha_ splits into *phonetic* syllables as bud-dha but splits into *orthographic* syllables as bu-ddha. I believe Thais are most likely to meet the concept if they study the Khom or Lanna script. Does Thai have the concept of 'orthographic' syllables, and if so, please, what is the word or phrase used for an 'orthographic syllable'?
Learned Pali in Thai script does not seem to have the concept of orthographic syllables. For example, the nominative singular of พุทฺธ is พุทฺโธ - the division is into phonetic syllables.
