There are two feeling resulting from two courses of action "เหงา" - 'lonely' and "เจ็บ" - 'pain'.
I can only think of relationships as sharing those feelings but there may be others.

บางทีการเดินไปข้างหน้าแล้ว sometimes walking ahead แล้วรู้สึก "เหงา" resulting in feeling "lonely".
นันอาจจะดีกว่าเดินไปทางเก่า that may be better than walking the old path แล้วรู้สึก "เจ็บ" resulting in feeling "pain".

Edit: Leading resulting in feeling lonely, staying as you are and feeling pain. Is another possibility, I guess you can make it fit lots of situations as a saying.
It may actually be a well known saw.

Thanks, Tgeezer, for that translation. I think you hit the nail on the head. As an alternative, how about:

"Sometimes carving out a new path is lonely; but it is not as painful as trudging along in the well-worn rut."
"Being adventurous can be lonely; but it is better than the pain of the old ways."
