Hi everybody!

Have had a wild discussion on an other forum about color blue. I mention กาฬ as dark blue and on TL it's described as black, dark blue among other meanings.

If I look at RID and and other sites it's very little about dark blue. As I understand dark blue when refering to กาฬ comes from the blueish-blackish-purple sometime with red nuances spots a corps get or is there any other explanaiton to that กาฬ also it's a word for dark blue. Or the dark spot that can be dark blue, dark or dark red-blue on the skin from acne.

But I think it did not gave much help according to why กาฬ refer to "dark blue" color. But I think I know from where สีกาฬ comes from. The key here is Sapphire นิลกาฬ = dark blue Sapphire with black tints in it , originaly blue Sapphire was called นิลกาฬ, nowdays it's called ไพลิน as you know.

As for those interested in buying gems today, ไพลิน is said to be previously called นิลกาฬ. However, as for those having old rings decorated with นิลกาฬ, the color of the gem on their rings is not the same as the color of ไพลิน.

In the literary sense, กาฬ is not understood as anything dark blue.

David I think it's not a matter of language, but history. There is no doubt that Blue Sapphire was callde นิลกาฬ before ไพลิน. But as Pirin stated กาฬ is black or นิล = black, นิลกาฬ = the color of the dark cloud .

Only นิล is Black Spinel or Spinel comes in various color as blue, red, black, brown, green and so on, Blue Sapphire is from the mineral Corundum. Corundum have many different color, blue corundum is named Sapphire, yellow yellow Sapphire and so on.

Transparent Corundum i called Star Sapphire. Sapphire is a multicolor stone, can be green, yellow, blue, light green, dark blue and so on. So นิลกาฬ can be blue or dark blue.

A better way to express นิลกาฬ is maybe เพชรนิลจินดา "precious stone, precious jewels", but whether กาฬ should be translated as dark blue, well I don't know?

But Im not an expert, I don't really know what to change or not change, as I understand and from what I read นิลกาฬ in Thailand is fully accepted when talking about Sapphire but nowdays they rather use ไพลิน.

ไพลิน a district in Campuchea is known for its mining of gem stones and Thai implanted the word ไพลิน into there language for Blue Sapphire to not mixe it with more cheaper spinel. นิลกาฬ was as I understand it a name for Spinel, Corundum that came in various colors, among other colors "blue".

Lots of people who know that the literal meaning of กาฬ and นิล is black know nothing about gems as well as the different colors of gems.

In addition, in สีหมอกเมฆ, literally, the colors of หมอก and เมฆ are not in any shade of the blue color.
