1.   [particle]
definition
[spoken to a person of lower status, or to an intimate acquaintance] yes

notesIn the past, this word was used by either a man or a woman when speaking to someone of equal status, but nowadays it tends to connote condescention, formerly to an equal, nowadays to an inferior

The polite terms used nowadays are:
  • by a woman to an equal: ค่ะ
  • by a woman to a superior: เจ้าค่ะ
  • by a man: ครับ  or more formally ขอรับ, ขอรับกระผม
  • by a woman or a man speaking to royalty: พระเจ้าค่ะ, พระพุทธเจ้าค่ะ,พระพุทธเจ้าข้า, พระพุทธเจ้าข้าขอรับ, พระพุทธเจ้าข้าขอรับใส่เกล้าใส่กระหม่อม (often shortened to เพคะ by women or พะยะค่ะ  by men)
เออ  or เออวะ  are familiar terms used especially by a man; used with variations as above at the end of a remark, especially an entreaty or a command, more or less equivalent to please, as in มาเถอะจ้ะ "Come, please."
