More logic

We all learn in different ways and my way is to learn the meanings of Thai words in Thai in order to distance it from an English equivalent word which may not be part of my parlance.
Take ที่ as a pronoun: คำใช้แทนคำนามหรือข้อความที่อยู่ข้างหน้า เช่น คนที่ขยัน เด็กที่ฉลาด

คนขยัน means all people with that quality. คนคนขยัน คนคน means more than one person, but คน คนขยัน means that there are many people and some among them possess that quality.
In order not to repeat คน, and who knows, perhaps to make Thai the equal of English! a pronoun is used คนที่ขยัน meaning people who have that quality.
You could say then that ที่ = who, but why bother? just say คนคนขยัน

If you hear คนขยันคน it must say "people with that quality, one of them" or a person with that quality. The second คน is a คำลักษณนาม
So คนขยันสองคน is two of them. คนขยันคนนั้น that one คนขยันนั้น those

You see in the definition: คำใช้แทนคำนามหรือข้อความที่อยู่ข้างหน้า if you replace ที่ with คำนามหรือขอความ I think it works.

I suspect that English books have made it more complicated than this so that ที่ appears to have taken on a life of its own somehow, I would like understand that too if anyone has any examples.

It is very good to know it. I know that in the future to read into this. It can be applied to practical use in the future.

Let me know how you get on; whether it makes sense to you in practice.

I've read about this before, it's okay if you try to study again.
