People who drive pickups (utes) in Thailand

I do a fair bit of driving in TL and it's always puzzled me why about 80% of people who drive pickups tend to drive a lot slower then the average car. I'm not talking about the ones loaded 12 feet high with goods in the tray but ones that are more or less empty. It tends to be the older vehicles (10 years+) that are driven slowly but I'm assuming that they are still capable of speeds of 100km/h. Are they trying to save money on fuel (pickups are less fuel efficient at speed than ordinary cars)?
