Dictionary app won't load on either iPad or iPhone...

Starting off with Thai dictionaries, I'm finally getting around to doing a review of iOS apps for learning Thai.

This dictionary app won't load on either my iPad or iPhone. I have not updated to 8 but all other dictionaries are loading fine (new, old, no difference).

Note: Like many others, I will not be updating to 8 until next year when I get a new iPhone.

Many are in the same position (iPhones get obsolete fast - seems like just yesterday when I got this one).

It's a pity but I will not be reviewing this app.

Sorry, Catherine. Christian, the developer, makes it clear in the App Store that his App requires iOS 8 or higher to function. Hope to see your review next year.

Clear or not, he's shooting himself in the foot by ignoring users. Other programmers are not ignoring older versions.

Dear Catherine,

I'm sorry I hadn't seen your message until now.

I completely agree that iOS 7 should be supported, and in fact, the iOS 8 requirement in the current version (1.7) was a mistake I made in the build configuration.

A few days ago, I corrected the mistake, and have since submitted a new version for review, which should be available for download within the coming 24 hours.

The new version will be 1.7.2, and should work just fine on iOS 7.

I'm sorry for the trouble, and looking forward to reading your review.

Regards,
Christian

Thank you for your kindness Christian. Apple is really pushing it with the iPhone. Mine isn't supposed to be obsolete until the update at the end of next year but 8 kicked it out early. I have Macs for 5-6 years before updating, but iPhones, as expensive as they are, only last a few years. My first iPhone is working fine... (it just won't run the new apps).

Btw: My dictionary series will start off with En-Th dictionaries that don't use the error riddled LEXiTRON data set straight out of the box. There are almost 80 iOS app Thai dictionaries in total. By the time I've taken out those for the Thai market, and those that use Thai databases like LEXiTRON, and then discount the sad ones that are limping along, only a handful are left for English speakers learning Thai (beginner/intermediate level). Yours is one of the few remaining - it's needed. So I thank you.

Thank you for your kind words, Catherine. For the most part, the honour is owed to Glenn, David and the other contributors, who put in tremendous effort in creating this resource.

No doubt, mobile phones tend to last not quite as long as computers, but certainly there is no good reason to obsolete your iOS 7 phone prematurely. Actually, in comparison with the competitors, I think Apple is doing a remarkable job supporting older devices with updates, and I believe we should follow suit and maintain as much legacy support as is feasible with this app.

I gave my first iPhone to a Thai friend in her 60's who's never accessed the internet except at my house. It's been a real treat to share in the joy she's having with the iPhone - her world got a lot bigger!

Before I gave it to her I tracked down older apps so that she wouldn't do without (things like being able to take videos, making decent recordings that'll send via email, etc). There are websites that host the older, popular apps, but not all are there.

Which reminds me... in the iTunes folder there's a subfolder called 'Mobile Applications' where older versions of apps reside (updating does not replace an app, older versions are still on your computer).

Here are instructions for restoring older iOS apps - http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/reinstall- ... ps-iphone/
... connect your device to iTunes and drag the backed up app from iTunes into your device. After that, click "Sync" button.

But even with the ability to backtrack, it's a pain to have to wait a year plus to use new and improved versions (especially if you've been waiting for bugs to be fixed). So I dearly thank you (and now my review won't mention fixed bugs :)

FYI, I've received reports that the version with reinstated iOS 7 compatibility is now available in the App Store.

Cheers,
Christian

Thanks Christian. I borrowed an iPhone (he'll be glad to get it back :)
