Several years ago I purchased a "Sony" memory card in Bangkok. When put in my camera it turned out to be fake.
What word would I use to describe it "ปลอม" or "เทียม"?

From the Longdo dictionary:

[N] fake, See also: counterfeit, artificial goods, Syn.

"This perfume is fake because its fragrance is different from the real thing."

Here is a sentence from a newspaper:

Thai businessmen are Buddhists and they conduct their business in accordance with Buddhist principles. Generally the do not cheat their customers and they do not sell counterfeit goods or low quality products.

I would say that the meaning of 'เทียม' is close to that of 'artificial' -- "made or produced to copy something natural; not real", but the meaning of 'ปลอม' is "(disapproving) not genuine", which means fake.

In formal or academic contexts, ฟันเทียม is chosen.
