Hello every one,
I would be very happy if someone could explain why there is a sara i on the dtoo tao ติ of สัญชาติ and it reads not chohn chaat"i"
no Thai people around I was able to explain to me if there is a rule?
The only answer I had was, reading is not the same as writing. It helps me a lot ☹️

Go to Volume 2 of the Dictionary of Buddhism and look up the word "ชาติ". You will see the following translation: "(Jàti) birth; rebirth".

Then, go to the Sanskrit dictionary at http://spokensanskrit.org/index.php?mod ... es&anz=100

In the English to Sanskrit section, search for the word "birth". Note that one of the results is "jAti". Double click on that word and see the results for the English translation. Note that this word means "descent, breed, species, family".

I suspect that the ancestral Thais ported this word into Thai from a Sanskrit or Pali origin and wished to retain the spelling which reflected the origin.

If one would wish to make a further conjecture, one could look at the Greek word "genos" which means "race, kind, offspring." Is it too far a stretch to consider whether "genos" has a common Indo-European ancestor shared with the Sanskrit "jAti"?

More a rule than an exception.

One of my first lessong in Thai raised the question: How many syllables has เหตุ?

Correct answer was, is, and will remain: 1 /het/.

One should probably just blindly accept it -:)

They go back to the same root, but the two formations probably co-existed in Proto-Indo-European. The Sanskrit word is cognate with Latin gens 'clan etc.'.
