Welcome ec2-3-17-75-138.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com to your personal control panel. Here you can set various options which are active whenever you visit thai-language.com on this computer.

These options are stored using the cookies feature of your browser. Since you are seeing this page, we have already determined that your browser is configured to allow cookies. You can view and manage your cookies at the bottom of this page.

The icon indicates features which require scripting to be enabled in your browser.

You are not logged in to this website. If you haven't created a message board profile yet, you can click here to get started. You don't have to be logged into the message board to use these site settings, but you won't be able to set your display name.

If you already have a profile, click here to log in.

Use the profile detail page to change your publicly displayed user name, password, personal info, and other message board settings.
Use 'Active topics' for forum home page.
Audio
Audio clips on thai-language.com are avaialable as either WMA or mp3. Use the test buttons below to determine your capabilities. You can select either format, and whether you want a the file to be played within the browser window ("embedded"). If you cannot use the embedded audio feature, or prefer to have an external player pop up, select the "external" option.

If you have problems playing the tests, click here to visit the Microsoft Windows Media download site. Ensure that you have the latest version of the Windows Media Player.
Externaltest external mp3
test external WMA
With this option, audio links use simple HTML <a> tags which link directly to the audio file. Depending on your configuration, a media player may launch either externally or embedded in your web browser. This is the most basic linking method. This setting is affected by the streaming option (below) but you must save the control panel changes to before you re-test with these links.
Embedded
Browser JavaScript support required Most people prefer the embedded method. This option uses JavaScript and object embedding to play the audio without leaving the browser or launching a (visible) media player.

mp3 Use mp3 files. This is the default for non-Windows computers.
WMA Windows Media Audio format may provide better sound quality. This is the default for Windows computers.
Streaming This website now supports true media streaming in combination with either of the above settings. Check this box if your computer and proxy support streaming media over RTSPT, RTSPU, or HTTP. If you change this checkbox, you must save changes before it takes effect for the above "test" buttons.

Fonts
Thai Typeface Name
This option allows you to specify the font which is requested for displaying Thai text throughout this website. For example, to use the JasmineUPC font, enter JasmineUPC in this space. Normally, you should use the name of a Unicode font here although using old TIS-620 fonts such as DB ThaiText does appear to work.

Before specifying a font here, you must first install it into your system using the system control panel. To determine the Typeface Name for a font, open the font from the fonts section of the system control panel and note its Typeface Name.

Leave this field blank to use the browser's configured Thai font (recommended).
Thai Font SizesYou can also specify the size which this website will request when displaying Thai text. The site uses one of four different sizes depending on what's being displayed. These values may need to be adjusted if you specify a typeface name in the section above.

A preview using the browser's default Thai font for each size is shown (updated when you change sizes, Browser JavaScript support required). To preview the font specified above, submit your changes first (see below), but note that if the specified font does not contain Thai characters, the browser will ignore your choice and display a font which does.

Select 'default' to allow the font sizes to change in relation to the browser's "Text Size" setting. Recommended settings are marked with an asterisk (*). Values marked with a dagger (†) equal our recommended values when your browser's "Text Size" is set to medium.

pt. สวัสดีครับSpecifies the size for smaller Thai text in the Phonemic Thai transcription display and the browsing indexes.
pt. สวัสดีครับSpecifies the size for most Thai text throughout this web site.
pt. สวัสดีครับSpecifies the size for larger Thai text throughout this web site.
pt. ใหญ่Specifies the size for very large Thai text.

Page Typeface
Specify the primary display font for the web page. It is recommended that you do not change this setting.

Macintosh users may wish to try 'MS Sans Serif' or 'Helvetica.' You can also leave this blank to allow the browser to control the fonts used by this web site.
Naked Vowel Placeholder
For illustrative purposes, vowels are sometimes displayed without a corresponding Thai consonant on this website—notably, on the vowels page. Windows® Vista™ has changed the way these vowels are displayed—a placeholder is automatically generated, making our presentation incorrect. The 'auto' setting, wherein no consonant placeholder will be generated for naked vowels if Vista is detected, and where a hyphen will be used otherwise, is recommended. (Vista™ is not detected.)
For a more technically correct Thai orthographic presentation, you may select the option.
Search
Single Query Result
Searches yielding exactly one result bypass the results summary page and navigate directly to the result item.
Retranslate masquerading TIS-620 Thai script
This option enables an alternate, more "forgiving" method of interpreting the encoding of a Thai search string, as follows: in addition to accepting properly rendered Thai characters, the "html entities" for a set of a certain 91 Roman-alphabet characters (i.e. with diacritical accents) are mapped to Thai characters according to the TIS-620 mapping. This allows you to submit just about any format of Thai text as a query, even if it looks like "garbage" characters. The disadvantage is that, when this mode is used, you cannot submit those extended Roman-alphabet characters (which are infrequently used in the English language and our database) as part of a query.

Search Modes You can set a default search mode for Thai and English queries. The larger search form on the dictionary front page allows you to temporarily override this choice but these defaults will usually be in effect for the left-column "Lookup" field. An exception is that when a previous search is "active"—meaning that results are displayed or the "new search" button was pressed—then the "Lookup" search will use the search mode of the (previous) active search. A simple way to restore the "Lookup" search mode to the defaults set here, would be to click on any tab, such as "Welcome."

The site default settings are marked with an asterix in the following controls.

Thai Search Mode
Choose the default search mode for when Thai script is submitted.
English Search Mode
Choose the default search mode for when English is submitted.

Bulk Lookup Display Mode
You can set a default display mode for the bulk lookup feature.

Romanization and Phonemic Thai
Romanization Display
You can control how romanizations and/or phonemic Thai are displayed. If you're a student who is learning to read Thai, you might wish to use the "Click to Show" Browser JavaScript support required option. With this option, a small icon is displayed in place of each romanization in the dictionary, and clicking on this icon reveals the romanization. This effectively turns every page of the dictionary into a reading quiz.

If you do not wish to see romanizations and/or phonemic Thai at all, you can select the "Do not show" option.

Romanization System
You can control the romanization system that is used throughout the website. Our "enhanced" mode is designed for maximum usefulness for casual web visitors who don't wish to learn special symbols and it's explained here.

Your 'default' selection is used for most romanization throughout the site. The recommended setting is 't-l Enhanced'. You can also choose which of the other schemes are displayed at the top of each dictionary entry by checking the 'show' option.

Similar to the "Do not show" setting for "Romanization Display", but this setting also disables transcriptions in the lessons, reference pages, search interface, and elsewhere.

The transcriptions selected in the "show" column are still shown at the top of each dictionary page; to remove these, clear all of the above checkboxes in this table.

Romanizations that appear on this website are generated according to these systems, not reproduced from them.

Output examples are provided in this table so that you can ensure that your system has an appropriate font installed for your selection(s). If required, you can change the font which is used for this feature:

Romanization HTML Style
It can be tricky to get the special characters used in transcription systems (such as IPA) to display satisfactorily. This field allows you to specify the HTML/CSS style which is applied to the transcription so that you can adjust it to your liking. This setting is only applied for the transcription systems which use special characters. The T-l Enhanced and RTGS modes use the Page Font setting (above). The Phonemic Thai mode use the smallest of the Thai Font settings (above).

For best results, install one of the SIL fonts, such as 'Charis SIL' from this page, or 'Doulos SIL' from this page, and specify your choice here, as shown in the example below.

Check here to certify that your use of the site conforms with educational "fair use" in accordance with 17 USC §107. This will enable display of additional protected content.
Enable Hover Definitions on Thai words
When enabled, the English definition is shown when you hover the mouse over a Thai word. However, this can create a lot of extra HTML which makes some of the larger dictionary pages (such as the alphabetical browsing pages) slower to download. In either case, the definitions are always just a click away.

AJAX and Browser Identification
Thai-language.com uses Asynchronous Java with XML (AJAX) for sideband communication between your web browser and our server. As this site evolves, more of the web page rendering will run on your client browser. This will speed up your user experience, because repetitive formatting information will only need to be transmitted to you once, when you first visit the site.

AJAX is currently used in the search form, now online feature, in some quizzes in the lessons section, in the reverse transcription results, and elsewhere.

These features require AJAX support in your browser. We have detected that your browser has the following AJAX support:
