Correct tones.

Aural and oral characteristics of the Thai language

Correct tones.

Postby Tgeezer » Wed Nov 16, 2016 12:33 am

After reviewing a few posts here I see that what I posted about the tone marks shortening the vowel has come up here in what I suppose is the correct forum.
What I think is worth mentioning is that Thai people don't all speak 'correctly' any more than any other people.
When it comes to the vowel เอะ where the tongue position is lower than อิ but not as low as แอะ can be said for the back vowels โอะ and เอาะ people tend to prefer the lower position probably because it is more natural. The recording of เล่น which Pirin observes if pronounced as lane is unnatural and David observes is an old recording is correct but seldom heard. Similarly few people use the inherent vowel โอะ when they say words like รถ บท preferring เอาะ .
it is simply a matter of elocution, it is easy to give a hint of 'o' in รถ and a hint of 'a' in เล่น it depends on how long you are going to make the vowel which brings us back to the first question, tone mark shortening the vowel.
How many of us in English care about elocution? Why should we care more in Thai? I would say it is we don't know enough Thai, rather than worry about how to say the word we should be working on what the word means.
"There's a moose loose about this hoose." No English speaker is confused by this, hoose must be house because there is no such word as hoose, so moose must be mouse.

A learner says: "Me Noo U ny baan" มีนูยูในบาน it is almost impossible for me to say ยูในบาน; the combination "screams" อยู่ในบ้าน . So,there is only one incorrect word here นู .
I wonder if Pirin agrees with me.

Please try to practice saying the following sentences regularly.

: ไม้ใหม่ไม่ไหม้ใช่ไหม
: ไม้ใหม่ไม่ไหม้

Later, you can do it naturally, I think.

I am practising Pirin, :) your link led me to many exercises, I find some of the rhymes and songs for สระ and - quite challenging at kid's speed!
ก เอะ เกะ ก เอ เก ก แะ แกะ ก แอ แก เกะ เก แกะ แก ใช้สระ เอะ สระเอ สระแอะ สระแอ
I see how diverting many of the questions about tones must be to you too.

I have done this exercise before, I find that if I think about what I am saying rather than trying to get the tones right it's not so difficult.

When you focus on the meaning, you are on the right track. Please try not to worry about what I think about the questions different members ask in this forum. They are basically intersting to me.
To tell you the truth, I have learnt 12 languages. I can read eight of them. If I work harder to remembers some more characters of Japanese and Mandarin, I will start to know how to read two more languages.
I hope you are not too surprised to hear that I'm so fluent in four languages that I can read any pieces of literature by myself.
What I just want to say is that I don't think there is any short cut in learning any language.

Fluent in four languages is impressive, it must mean that there is little time to do anything else.
I have decided to learn to type now so bought a keyboard for my iPad, I have a seven day course which I have used before but haven't typed for so long that my Thai is far behind my English now.
