old wives' tales

Postby meythai » Fri Jul 25, 2014 1:22 pm

when reading the section on this site about old wives' tales i found some things i was familiar with and a few i had never heard of (such as keeping eggs and oranges in a basket to bring good luck). i would like to add a couple more. i know a girl is not supposed to sit in doorways lest she have a difficult delivery when pregnant. i have also heard it is bad luck or wrong to point at a rainbow. why is that? also why is it bad to stack dishes when still eating, even with close family. if your wife does not finish her rice and you eat it, don't stack her dish on top of yours as you eat. what is the thinking behind this? or is it simply perceived as bad manners?

by the way any other old superstitions would be interesting to know. thanks.
