The Thai are proud of the Chinese influence on Thai art. Chinese artisans were brought to Thailand during the reign of King
Chulalongkorn, Rama V. They created Chinese-style sculpture and architecture, such as Wehat Chamrun Palace at Bang Pa In,
the "summer palace" up the Chao Phraya river from Bangkok.A popular day tour departs from the famed Oriental hotel in Bangkok and includes a brief bus tour of Bang Pa In and the ruins of Ayutthaya, followed by a luncheon on a boat back down the river to Bangkok. Service has been restored after one of the boats, the Oriental Queen sank (while unmanned) in 2002. |
