The Thai are proud of the Chinese influence on Thai art. Chinese artisans were brought to Thailand during the reign of King
Chulalongkorn, Rama V. They created Chinese-style sculpture and architecture, such as Wehat Chamrun Palace at Bang Pa In,
the "summer palace" up the Chao Phraya river from Bangkok. A popular day tour departs from the famed Oriental hotel in Bangkok and includes a brief bus tour of Bang Pa In and the ruins of Ayutthaya, followed by a luncheon on a boat back down the river to Bangkok. Service has been restored after one of the boats, the Oriental Queen sank (while unmanned) in 2002. |
