Central Thailand is worth a visit if only to look at Sukothai and the equally impressive Si Satchanalai Historical parks. This photo shows the most important site in the Sukothai Historical Park, Wat Mahathat. This served as the temple for the Thai king during the period 1230-1440 A.D., when Sukothai was the capial of Thailand. Many of the several hundred smaller chedis which surround the main spire may have been contributed by citizens making merit and seeking favor with the king. Early in the morning on June 6, 1996, park workers can be seen cutting the grass. |
