The photo gallery tour begins in the Northeast part of Thailand, an part of the country that is infrequently visited by tourists. The city of Nakhon Ratchasima (นครราชสีมา), also known as Khorat (โคราช ), is the second largest city in Thailand after Bangkok. The reason that few tourists visit Khorat or the Northeast part of Thailand is that it is perceived as a poor farming area with relatively little to do. Ongoing restoration of ruined 12th century Khmer architecture is encouraging increased tourism—ruins from this period are scattered across the lower Khorat plateau. Just south of the city is a large Thai air force base which was used by the United States as a major base of operations during the Vietnam era. It was used as a base for the secret bombing of Cambodia which occurred during the Nixon administration. In any case, many US military personnel were stationed in Khorat, which contributed to rapid development of the city during the early 1970s. This photo looks out through the eastern Khorat city gate—the city has long since spilled out of its ancient walls, particularly towards the west. |
