![]() 1996 marked the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's succession to the Thai throne, and many celebrations and public holidays occurred throughout the year. One of the largest celebrations was held in Bangkok on June 9, the anniversary of coronation. Hundreds of thousands of Thais swarmed the Sanam Luang area to hold a candlelit vigil and watch no less than five simultaneous fireworks displays. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy under a new constitution enacted in 1997. On September 19, 2006, the military overthrew prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who had become embroiled in a controversy over, among other things, the tax-free sale of his personal interest in the Thai telecommunications conglomerate Shin to Singaporean investors. |
