"เตียงหัก"

Postby David and Bui » Sat Aug 02, 2014 1:06 am

Here's a new word for the dictionary that has been in the news lately: "เตียงหัก" (literally "broken bed")

From the Sanook Dictionary: "เตียงหัก - คำเรียกคู่สามีภรรยาที่แต่งงานกัน มีอะไรกันแล้วเลิกกัน"
". . . this term is used to connote [what happens when] a husband and wife gets married, has difficulty between them, and splits apart."

The term can be found in the Royal Institute's "Dictionary of New Words, Volume I":

"เตียงหัก ก. เลิกร้างจากชีวิตคู่ เช่น คู่นี้แต่งงานกันไม่ถึงปี ก็เตียงหักเสียแล้ว."
". . . to get a divorce from being a couple. Example. 'This couple has not been married even a year, and already they're getting a divorce."

Sentence from the newspaper: "เมื่อแรกมีข่าวคราว "เตียงหัก-รักร้าว" ปฏิกิริยาบางฝ่ายของสังคมยังเทไปข้างสะใจ สมใจ"

Perhaps also, "to split", "break up".
