The island province of Puket (ภูเก็ต — phuuM getL) is the wealthiest per capita in Thailand, thanks to booming international and domestic tourism.
Second only to Pattaya (near Bangkok) in popularity as a beach destination, Phuket offers cleaner seas and slightly more tasteful
development. This photo, taken on June 12, 1996, shows the sunset on Patong beach, the island's busiest tourist strip. The island is
located at a lattitude of nine degrees north in the Andaman Sea, just off the west coast of Thailand, to which it is connected by a
bridge. Mining is no longer a major industry on Phuket, although past operations have left their mark in the form of ugly umber sinkholes and stripped mountaintops. The interior of the island also features a lot of rubber production plantations. |
