A popular excursion in northern Thailand is a two day raft trip down the Kok River from Tha Ton to Chiang Rai. There are two
different operations in Tha Ton—one uses an all-bamboo raft, and the other, shown here, uses a steel-bottomed raft with a
bamboo surface. There are two guides, who carefully guide the boat with long poles or a rudder, and who cook delicious meals
for the three to five passengers. Silently (except for the sound of the guides chatting in a Northern Thai dialect) the raft
drifts past many hill-tribe villages and through mountainous scenery. There are even some mild rapids on the trip. This photo was taken early in the morning on May 7, 1996, shortly after we shoved off from our overnight stop. A steamy mist was quickly burning off as the temperature shot upwards. |
