There is no longer a legal timber industry in Thailand, since widespread deforestation required the government to make
logging illegal in 1989. This has been a problem for the elephant population, which was primarily used to haul cut timber. The country's
several thousand elephants are now essentially unemployed. Some of these elephants, such as this one in Ruammid, a village on the Kok
river in northern Thailand, are now used for tourism. Elephant rides can be hired by the hour, day or week.From atop a wading elephant of my own, I took this photo on May 6, 1996. |
