 The town of Thakhilek, Burma, just across Hta-Lang river from Mae Sai in Thailand, has been developed somewhat by the Burmese government. Just outside the city limits, however, the pavement, utilities, and other amenities abruptly stop at a sign forbidding tourists to proceed further into the military-controlled country. (May 5, 1996) |
