ชื่อผึ้งขนาดเล็กหลายชนิดในวงศ์ Apidae เช่น ชนิด Trigona terminata, Melipona apicalis โดยทั่วไปมีขนาดลำตัวยาวไม่เกิน ๑๐ มิลลิเมตร อกกว้างไม่เกิน ๒.๕ มิลลิเมตร อยู่รวมกันเป็นฝูงและแบ่งวรรณะเป็นผึ้งผู้ ผึ้งเมีย และผึ้งงานเหมือนกัน แต่ผึ้งงานไม่มีเหล็กในเหมือนผึ้งธรรมดา รังทำจากขี้ผึ้งผสมขี้ดินและยางไม้ ขนาดหอยโข่งหรือตะโหงกวัว จึงมักจะเรียกผึ้งหอยโข่ง หรือผึ้งตะโหงกวัว แต่มีชื่ออื่นอีกมากมายแตกต่างไปตามท้องถิ่น เช่น หูด ขี้ตังนี หรือ กินชัน, อีสานเรียก ขี้สูด.
