December 21, 2002 12:00 PM by Glenn Slayden   Big Transliteration Changes

This site is now available at thai-language.info and thailanguage.info, as well as thai-language.com, .net, and .org.

These past few days I have been working on another revision of the transliterator; I don't know when or if this change will be uploaded to the site. It's a major rework of the code that gives a very subtle result. Read on for the details:

The previous method was to inhibit generation of any inherent vowels in an entire word until after any solutions not using inherents have been sought. If no solutions were found, then -oh- only would be enabled (for the entire word, i.e. all syllables), and only when this failed would -a be enabled. As a result, dipthong and tripthong possibilities which occurred in the latter part of long words were not fully explored. In the new strategy, we'll still try for any non-inherent solutions first, but then after that we'll use recursion to dynamically enable inherents only on an as-needed, per-syllable basis, thus essentially weighting dipthong and tripthong adoption more heavily.

In the course of this work I also discovered that the dipthongs -ิย and -ุย were not being handled correctly, so these were fixed and the new vowels chart adjusted accordingly.

December 16, 2002 12:00 PM by Glenn Slayden   Major Rewrite of the Transliterator

Executed major changes to the transliterator, effecting many corrections, especially of loanwords and the treatment of the การันต์.

December 15, 2002 12:00 PM by Glenn Slayden   Transliteration of Double-Consonant

Transliterator: programmed the double consonant ฟร, which was previously not handled based on Marie-Hélène Brown's text, but is actually used in many loanwords. Added handling for the common single syllable เ-ิร์-.

December 14, 2002 12:00 PM by Glenn Slayden   Inline Thai for English Definitions and Notes!

Corrected, split, added, and cleaned-up many entries. Now ~16393 entries.

Enabled nested prefixing (as in น้ำส้มสายชู).

Added inline-Thai (## format) verification to the database validation routines and fixed a couple problems that were thus detected.

In the new vowels chart, added ฤ and its variants, and made ัว the long variant of -ัวะ (I'm hoping this is right—its transliteration is thus changed from -ua to -uaa). This change bumped -วา into its own entry in the table, and changed its transliteration from -uaa to -waa.

December 13, 2002 12:00 PM by Glenn Slayden   Note Builder Alpha Experiment

Started experimenting with the new "note builder".

December 11, 2002 12:00 PM by Glenn Slayden   "Email This Page"

Added a link to each dictionary page for emailing a link to that page to an email recipient.

December 6, 2002 12:00 PM by Glenn Slayden   Vowels Page!

Rewrote the vowels/transliteration reference page from scratch. Fixed a few transliterator bugs and changed some transliterations to consistently reflect long-duration vowels.

Optimized and rearranged some internal data structures (now format version 10). Merged obsolete "obsolete" part-of-speech flag into "archaic".

Broke reference topics into separate .ASP files.
