Please help me find the meaning of the name Lilayvanh

Postby kevan1957 » Thu Jun 18, 2015 5:59 pm

Hello to YOU!

My name is Kevan Corkill and I live in San Antonio, Texas.

The reason for contacting you is the fact that I have a co-worker at Takumi Stamping Texas, Inc. and her name is Lilayvanh and she is 36 years old and is of Lao descent. Her father does not know the meaning of her name. She and her father have a different version of how her name is pronounced. I told Lilayvanh that I would try.

I can usually find the meaning of names and their pronunciation on several on line name sites, but Lilayvanh has not returned any results. So, I am turning to you in the hope that you will be able to direct me to the meaning of her name and pronunciation.

What I would like to present to her is her name written in Lao and in English with the meaning written in Lao and in English and the pronunciation in Lao and in English.

If there is any information you can give me, I would very much appreciate it.

I thank you so much for your time in this matter in advance.

Sincerely yours,

Kevan Corkill.
P.S. She pronounces her name "lily" "van" with "van" sounded like "fawn"

A guess only ... Both my English and Lao are limited:

เรไรหวาน = rerai wan = sweet grasshopper

Thomas, I give you credit for tryin' because I don't know all that much about lao at all I don't mean to be a nay-sayer but.. . ..

Isn't the character in Lao script () pronounced as a ??
โรงแรม in Lao is pronounced as โฮงแฮม

I think we need to call out the big guns, and that ain't me.. :)

tod-daniels, I'm all but sure about my guess (what currently disturbs me most is that เรไรหวาน = rerai in RTGS which does not fit really with Lilay).

Actually, however, there is a consonant shift Thai->Isan->Lao so that the Thai ro ruea can be pronounced as /h/ AND /l/ in Isan/Lao.

The Lao letter quoted by you, however, is actually called "ro lot" :D

See:
ຣົຖນອນ rōt nɔ́ːn
ລົດນອນ lōt nɔ́ːn
---
Hotel: ໂຮງແຮມ hóːŋhɛ́ːm ; agree, or Chan rak thoe = khoi hak chao.

But please note that not all Thai ro ruea turn out to be /h/ in Isan/Lao.

ບໍຣິຈາ bɔː rī caː
ບໍລິຈາ bɔ̀ːlīcàː
ພັນຣະຍາ pʰán rā ɲáː
ພັນລະຍາ pʰán lā ɲáː

Isan is: Nai lot hon bo = Is it hot in the car? ;)
There are three kinds of people: Those who can count and those who cannot.

Good on you Thomas for being sure.. I still have my doubts... :o

FWIW: Isaan Thai is NOT Lao! Not by any wild stretch of anyone's imagination. :?

Nothing will piss 6+ million born-bred-rice fed native Laotians off faster than saying Isaan is the Lao language.. To real Laotians, Isaan is a bastardized/hybridized version of thai/lao mixed .

FWIW: I have NEVER seen Isaan inside this country represented in Lao script, it's ALWAYS been written in thai.

Again, I dunno, and and I only know a smattering of Isaan, mostly due to the incredible negative stigma associated with speaking it in a country where the official language is ภาษากลาง <- Central Thai (notice I didn't say ภาษากรุงเทพ - Bangkok Thai).. Those are animals of a different color too. ;)

I'd tell the O/P to get ahold of that Linguistics graduate student from USC, Alif Silpachai. He's got a ton of you tube videos out
https://www.youtube.com/user/alifshinobi
I'd bet he'd answer the question.
He's probably forgotten more about thai or lao than we'll ever know. .

My next door neighbour makes the distinction between Lao and Lao Isaan (his words), we're about 100 metres from Laos and around 500 kms from Isaan, lots of Lao folks in our street, they recognise the connection, both linguistically, and ethnically, with the people of Isaan. The stigma you mention evaporates once you leave the big cities. :)

What does "she is of Lao descent" imply? Did people in her family live in Laos or in Thailand a long time ago?

Hello to each of You!

I want to thank each of You for Your part in piecing this puzzle together for me. I have been away for awhile and just returned to the website. Lilayvanh is first generation Lao born in America as her parents came to America from Laos in the 1970s and settled in the town of Live Oak near San Antonio, Texas.

I will combine all of the information each of You have given me and present this to her.

Once again, thank You so very much!

Sincerely Yours,

Kevan Corkill
