Many visitors come to Thailand only for the sandy sunny beaches of the south, and with good reason. There is a beach to suit every
taste, from complete seclusion to touristy excess. Thai people erect spirit houses (ศาลพระภูมิ) around residences and other important places or buildings to provide an attractive place for good spirits to live. Although this is an important cultural tradition and the spirit houses (like this one) are often decorated with Buddhist motifs, the practice is not a formal part of Buddhist religion. This spirit house protects the pier or harbor at Hat Rin Nai on the island Ko Pha Ngan (เกาะพะงัน) in the Gulf of Thailand. In the distance is the island Ko Samui (เกาะสมุย), about fifty minutes away by slow passenger ferry. Photo taken on June 20, 1997, the day after Ko Pha Ngan's famous full moon party, which draws an eclectic assortment of revelers from around the globe each month. |
