"Longtail" boats (เรือหางยาว ) are named for the single unprotected propeller at the end of a long shaft driven by a swivel-mounted engine.
By moving the whole engine, the propeller can be pointed in any direction, which simultaneously propels and steers the banana-shaped
wooden boat. These noisy boats are used all over Thailand, from the canals of Bangkok to the fishing villages of the Andaman Sea and
the Gulf of Thailand, and even the rivers in the North. This photo was taken on June 27, 1997 near Ban Paw on the island of Phuket. |
