Phang Nga Bay, in the Andaman Sea, off Thailand's west coast, features innumerable limestone karst islands formed by a prehistoric
uplifting of the ocean floor. These islands have many tidal sea caves which can be explored by sea canoe (for highly recommended tours,
contact SeaCanoe at info@seacanoe.com). Some of the caves lead to interior lagoons fully surrounded by sheer cliffs of the island, a not
yet understood geological feature called “haawngF” (ห้อง  ), which means "room" in Thai.Some of these caves are also extensive enough to be completely dark inside, requiring a flashlight for successful navigation. This photo shows a guide paddling an inflatable sea canoe out of a sea cave. The photo was taken on a day tour (June 27, 1997) departing from Phuket. Many of these caves are only accessible for a short time when the tide is neither too high nor too low. Tidal currents also make exploring the caves dangerous without a knowledgeable guide. |
