In the rural areas of Thailand, the most common transportation is the songthaew (สองแถว), which literally means, "two rows." This converted pickup
truck is named for the two parallel benches in the rear. The songthaew is used as a taxi, bus, or schoolbus, as shown in this picture. This photo
was taken on July 1, 1997, as school let out in the town of Pak Thong Chai, south of Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat), Thailand. This truck was one of
several similarly loaded vehicles that departed from the school. Looks like the girls are in back and the boys are on top. Highway accidents are the leading cause of unnatural death in Thailand, with around 14,000 fatalities annually. The main reason for this is reckless driving, and when accidents do happen, they often involve vehicles overloaded with passengers. |
