จำนอง คือ การที่บุคคลคนหนึ่งเรียกว่า "ผู้จำนอง" เอาอสังหาริมทรัพย์ของตน เช่น ที่ดินหรือทรัพย์ที่กฎหมายอนุญาตให้จำนองได้ ไปจดทะเบียนไว้กับบุคคลอีกคนหนึ่งเรียกว่า "ผู้รับจำนอง" เพื่อเป็นหลักประกันในการชำระหนี้
