Pleasure and pain can be compared to a poisonous snake.
maH nootH raoM thangH laaiR maiF dtawngF gaanM thookH
We humans do not want pain.
dtawngF gaanM dtaaeL sookL
[We] only want pleasure.
khwaamM jingM sookL nanH gaawF kheuuM thookH yaangL laH iiatL
Truthfully, pleasure is suffering which has been refined.
chenF diaaoM gapL thookH gaawF kheuuM thookH yaangL yaapL
...just as pain is raw suffering.
phuutF yaangL ngaaiF sookL laeH thookH gaawF bpriiapL saL meuuanR nguuM dtuaaM neungL
Simply stated, pleasure and pain can be compared to a snake.
thaangM huaaR manM bpenM thookH thaangM haangR manM bpenM sookL
Its head is pain; its tail is pleasure.
phrawH thaaF luupF thaangM huaaR manM meeM phitH manM gaawF gatL aoM
Because, if you stroke its head with its poison, it will bite and kill you.
bpaiM japL haangR manM gaawF meuuanR bpenM sookL
If you catch it by the tail, it will be like pleasure.
dtaaeL thaaF japL maiF waangM
But if you do catch it by the tail and not let it go...,
manM gaawF hanR glapL maaM gatL daiF meuuanR ganM will twist around and bite you.
phrawH thangH huaaR nguuM laeH haangR nguuM manM gaawF yuuL naiM nguuM dtuaaM diaaoM ganM
This is because both the snake’s head and its tail are parts of the same snake.
chenF diaaoM gapL sookL laeH thookH
The same is true for pleasure and suffering.
seungF bpenM singL diaaoM ganM
Which are the same thing.
