Reading Exercise: Language » The Language Crisis

“วิกฤตของภาษา”, โดย อาจารย์ ฮารา ชินทาโร, 30 กรกฎาคม, 2014 “The Language Crisis”, Professor Hara Shintaro, 30 July 2014

ตั้งแต่มีหนังสือพิมพ์ชาวอังกฤษแสดงความเห็นกันว่าภาษาอังกฤษอยู่ในภาวะวิกฤต โดยอ้างว่า ผู้ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษมีการออกเสียงไม่ถูกต้อง หรือมีการสะกดผิดมากมาย

Ever since there have been newspapers, the English have expressed their opinion that the English language was in a state of crisis, by claiming that English speakers mispronounce their words or spell their words incorrectly.
แนวคิดแบบนี้มีอยู่ในเกือบทุกภาษา
naaeoM khitH baaepL neeH meeM yuuL naiM geuuapL thookH phaaM saaR
This kind of thinking pervades almost all languages.
ผู้ใช้ของภาษาใดภาษาหนึ่งโดยเฉพาะบรรดาเจ้าของภาษาที่หวังดีกับภาษาของตนเป็นห่วงกับ คุณภาพการใช้ภาษาในสังคม

Native speakers of any particular language are concerned about the quality of that language in society as a whole; this is especially true for those speakers who want nothing but the best for their own language.
ซึ่งตามสายตาของพวกเขา มีแต่การเสื่อมในเรื่องการออกเสียง การสะกดหรือการใช้คำที่พากเขามองว่าไม่ถูกต้อง

From their point of view, they perceive only deterioration in the way words are pronounced; and, the way that words are spelled and how they are used they deem as “incorrect”.
สิ่งที่น่าสังเกตคือแม้ว่ามีคนที่เป็นห่วงกับคุณภาพของภาษาอังกฤษลดลงและอยู่ในวิกฤตตลอด แต่ภาษาดังกล่าวก็มีการพัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่องจนถึงมีฐานะเปรียบเสมือน ภาษาราชการแห่งโลก ก็ว่าได้

It should be noted that even though there are people who are worried about the deteriorating quality of the English language, this is a language which is constantly under development; so much so that it can be said that it has attained the state of being the official global language.
ประเทศที่ใหญ่ที่สุดที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาหลักในโลกไม่ใช่ประเทศอังกฤษ ซึ่งเป็นบ้านเกิดของภาษานี้ แต่เป็นประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา

The nation with the largest number of English speakers in the world is not England, the country where the language originated, but is the United States of America.
ซึ่งใช้ภาษาอังกฤษที่ไม่ถูกต้อง ตามจากบรรทัดฐานของประเทศอังกฤษ ทั้งในการออกเสียงการสะกดของคำศัพท์หลาย ๆ คำ และไวยากรณ์บางเรื่อง

[This is the country] where, based on British standards, [the people] speak English incorrectly, both in their pronunciation, in their spelling of many words, and in some elements of their grammar.
ปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้ภาษาอังกฤษได้พัฒนาเป็นภาษาโลกไม่ได้อยู่ที่การรักษามาตรฐานอย่างเข้มงวด แต่การยอมรับความหลากหลายของการใช้ภาษา

The important factor that caused English to develop into the world’s [official] language is not that the language is held to a strict standard, but, [rather], it is the allowance of diversity in the use of the language.
ทางสำนักข่าว BBC ซึ่งก่อนหน้านี้เป็นแม่แบบของการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ (ดังนั้นการออกเสียงภาษาอังกฤษมาตรฐานบางครั้งก็เรียกว่าBBC English) มีการบรรยายประจำปีที่มีชื่อว่า Reith Lectures

The British Broadcasting Company which [holds itself out to be] the model for the English language (therefore, the standard for English pronunciation is sometimes called “BBC English”) has an annual lecture series called the Reith Lectures...
โดยเชิญบุคคลสำคัญระดับโลกเพื่อทำหน้าที่ของสื่อมวลชนในการส่งเสริมชีวิตทางปัญญาและวัฒนธรรม ตั้งแต่เริ่มต้นการบรรยายในปี ค.ศ. 1948 โดยมี Bertrand Russell เป็นผู้บรรยาย

...which involves inviting certain important world personages under its journalistic responsibility for promoting the [nation’s] intellectual and cultural life. [The series began] with a 1948 lecture by Bertrand Russell.
บุคคลที่ได้รับเชิญส่วนใหญ่เป็นเจ้าของภาษาอังกฤษ แต่ยังมีการเชิญบุคคลที่ไม่ใช่เจ้าของภาษามากขึ้น ดังเช่น Edward Said (1993), Vilayanur S.. Ramachandran (2003), Daniel Barenboim (2006), Aung San Suu Kyi 2011)

Most of the people invited with native English speakers, but increasingly some of those who were invited were not native speakers of English, including Edward Sain in 1993, Vilayanur S. Ramachandran in 2003, Daniel Barenboim in 2006, and Aung San Suu Kyi in 2011.
บางท่านมีสำเนียงภาษาต่างประเทศอย่างชัดเจน

Some of [these lecturers] spoke [English] with a decidedly foreign accent.

dtaaeL phuuF fangM thookH khohnM gaawF saaR maatF khaoF jaiM neuuaH haaR theeF naaF sohnR jaiM daiF yaangL deeM
However, those who listen to the lectures were easily able to comprehend [their] substance (which was very interesting).
การเชิญบุคคลเหล่านี้ก็บ่งบอกถึงความเปิดกว้างของสังคมอังกฤษที่ยอมรับการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษที่มีความหลากหลายเพราะเน้นเนื้อหาสาระ
gaanM cheernM bookL khohnM laoL neeH gaawF bohngL baawkL theungR khwaamM bpeertL gwaangF khaawngR sangR khohmM angM gritL theeF yaawmM rapH gaanM chaiH phaaM saaR angM gritL theeF meeM khwaamM laakL laaiR phrawH nenH neuuaH haaR saaR raH
Inviting these people indicates the openness of English society which is willing to accept a great diversity in English language expression because [the English] emphasized content and substance.
ภาษาที่มีผู้ใช้มากที่สุดในโลกคือภาษาจีน โดยมีผู้ใช้ส่วนใหญ่ก็อยู่ในประเทศสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน ซึ่งใช้ตัวอักษรตัวย่อ (ไม่ใช่ตัวเต็ม)
phaaM saaR theeF meeM phuuF chaiH maakF theeF sootL naiM lo:hkF kheuuM phaaM saaR jeenM dooyM meeM phuuF chaiH suaanL yaiL gaawF yuuL naiM bpraL thaehtF saaR thaaM raH naH ratH bpraL chaaM chohnM jeenM seungF chaiH dtuaaM akL saawnR dtuaaM yaawF maiF chaiF dtuaaM dtemM
The language which has the greatest number of speakers in the world is Chinese; the majority of speakers live in the People’s Republic of China and they use simplified characters (not traditional characters).
ข้อดีของตัวย่อคือจำง่าย แต่ตัวย่อหลาย ตัวแตกต่างไปจากตัวเต็มที่ยังใช้กันอยู่ในฮ่องกงหรือไต้หวัน
khaawF deeM khaawngR dtuaaM yaawF kheuuM jamM ngaaiF dtaaeL dtuaaM yaawF laaiR dtuaaM dtaaekL dtaangL bpaiM jaakL dtuaaM dtemM theeF yangM chaiH ganM yuuL naiM haawngF gohngM reuuR dtaiF wanR
The benefit of the simplified method is that it is easy to remember but many of the simplified characters differ from their traditional counterparts which are still used in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
จนถึงเดาไม่ออกว่า อักษรเดิมตัวเต็ม) ของอักษรเหล่านี้คือตัวไหน
johnM theungR daoM maiF aawkL waaF akL saawnR deermM dtuaaM dtemM khaawngR akL saawnR laoL neeH kheuuM dtuaaM naiR
[They are so different] that one cannot guess what their equivalent traditional method characters are.
ดังนั้นตอนนี้ภาษาจีนก็มีระบบเขียนสองระบบได้แก่อักษรตัวย่อกับอักษรตัวเต็ม (ซึ่งระหว่างฮ่องกงกับไต้หวันก็ยังมีข้อแตกต่างบ้าง)
dangM nanH dtaawnM neeH phaaM saaR jeenM gaawF meeM raH bohpL khiianR saawngR raH bohpL daiF gaaeL akL saawnR dtuaaM yaawF gapL akL saawnR dtuaaM dtemM seungF raH waangL haawngF gohngM gapL dtaiF wanR gaawF yangM meeM khaawF dtaaekL dtaangL baangF
Therefore, currently the Chinese language is represented by two systems, the simplified system and the traditional system (although there are some differences between the Hong Kong and Taiwanese characters).
แต่ไม่ได้หมายความว่า ระบบใดระบบหนึ่งเป็นระบบที่ "ไม่ถูกต้อง"
dtaaeL maiF daiF maaiR khwaamM waaF raH bohpL daiM raH bohpL neungL bpenM raH bohpL theeF maiF thuukL dtawngF
But, this does not mean that one of the two systems is “incorrect.”
ผู้ใช้ภาษาใดภาษาหนึ่งมักจะมองว่า การที่มีการสะกดผิดหรือการออกเสียงที่ไม่ถูกต้องนั้นเป็นวิกฤตของภาษาเนื่องจากภาษาเป็นเครื่องมือการสื่อสารที่สำคัญที่สุดประเภทหนึ่งสำหรับมนุษย์
phuuF chaiH phaaM saaR daiM phaaM saaR neungL makH jaL maawngM waaF gaanM theeF meeM gaanM saL gohtL phitL reuuR gaanM aawkL siiangR theeF maiF thuukL dtawngF nanH bpenM wiH gritL khaawngR phaaM saaR neuuangF jaakL phaaM saaR bpenM khreuuangF meuuM gaanM seuuL saanR theeF samR khanM theeF sootL bpraL phaehtF neungL samR rapL maH nootH
Speakers of a particular language often believe that misspellings or mispronunciations mean that the language is in crisis due to the fact that language is the most important medium of communications for human beings.
การที่มีมาตรฐานในการสื่อสารเป็นเรื่องที่สำคัญ
gaanM theeF meeM maatF dtraL thaanR naiM gaanM seuuL saanR bpenM reuuangF theeF samR khanM
Having standards in communications is a very important concern.
แต่ภาษาที่มีชีวิตทุกภาษา (หรือ ภาษาที่ยังมีสังคมผู้ใช้) ก็อยู่กับความเปลี่ยนแปลง
dtaaeL phaaM saaR theeF meeM cheeM witH thookH phaaM saaR reuuR phaaM saaR theeF yangM meeM sangR khohmM phuuF chaiH gaawF yuuL gapL khwaamM bpliianL bplaaengM
However, living languages (or languages which have a community of language users) must adapt to changes.
ที่นี่ เราควรเข้าใจว่าการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นภาษาก็ไม่ใช่ความเสื่อมของคุณภาพ
theeF neeF raoM khuaanM khaoF jaiM waaF gaanM bpliianL bplaaengM theeF geertL kheunF phaaM saaR gaawF maiF chaiF khwaamM seuuamL khaawngR khoonM naH phaapF
So, we must understand that the fact that language do undergo changes does not mean that the language is becoming devalued.
วิกฤตอันแท้จริงของภาษาคือ สถานการณ์ที่คนในสังคมใช้ภาษาโดยปราศจากความคิด เพื่อการหลอก การล้างสมอง การสร้างภาพและการโฆษณาชวนเชื่อ
wiH gritL anM thaaeH jingM khaawngR phaaM saaR kheuuM saL thaanR naH gaanM theeF khohnM naiM sangR khohmM chaiH phaaM saaR dooyM bpraatL saL jaakL khwaamM khitH pheuuaF gaanM laawkL gaanM laangH saL maawngR gaanM saangF phaapF laeH gaanM kho:htF saL naaM chuaanM cheuuaF
The real language crisis occurs when people in the society use language without thinking; for the purpose of deceit and brainwashing; or to create [false] images and propaganda.
ซึ่งคนในสังคมไม่สามารถใช้ภาษาอีกต่อไปเพื่อถ่ายทอดความคิดเห็นหรือเพื่อสร้างความเข้มแข็งให้แก่ความคิดของตน
seungF khohnM naiM sangR khohmM maiF saaR maatF chaiH phaaM saaR eekL dtaawL bpaiM pheuuaF thaaiL thaawtF khwaamM khitH henR reuuR pheuuaF saangF khwaamM khemF khaengR haiF gaaeL khwaamM khitH khaawngR dtohnM
So that people in that society are unable to use their language anymore for the purpose of transmitting their opinions or for the purpose of strengthening their own thinking.
คนไทยมักจะตัดสินใจความฉลาดของคนต่างชาติด้วยการออกเสียงภาษาไทย
khohnM thaiM makH jaL dtatL sinR jaiM khwaamM chaL laatL khaawngR khohnM dtaangL chaatF duayF gaanM aawkL siiangR phaaM saaR thaiM
Thai people often judge the intelligence of foreigners based on the way [foreigners] pronounce the Thai language.
แน่นอนว่าการออกเสียงเป็นปัจจัยหนึ่งที่สำคัญของระบบภาษา
naaeF naawnM waaF gaanM aawkL siiangR bpenM bpatL jaiM neungL theeF samR khanM khaawngR raH bohpL phaaM saaR
It is certainly true that pronunciation is one of the critical language skills.
แต่ยังมีประเด็นสำคัญอีกมากมายในระบบที่เราเรียกว่า "ภาษา"
dtaaeL yangM meeM bpraL denM samR khanM eekL maakF maaiM naiM raH bohpL theeF raoM riiakF waaF phaaM saaR
However, there are many other important elements contained within the system which we call “language”.
การออกเสียงที่ดีและลายมือที่สวยแค่ไหนก็ไม่มีความหมายในขณะที่เนื้อหาที่จะถ่ายทอดนั้นไม่มีเนื้อหาสาระ

Good pronunciation and beautiful handwriting alone are meaningless if the message you are trying to communicate has no meaning.
