saL watL deeM khrapH wanM neeH phohmR jaL maaM phuutF theungR reuuangF gaanM thamM thaanM naH khrapH
Hello! Today I am going to discuss charitable giving.
gaanM thamM thaanM gaawF kheuuM gaanM thamM boonM yaangL neungL
Making charitable donations [to monks] is a one way of making merit.
dtaaeL bpenM gaanM thamM boonM dooyM gaanM haiF naH khrapH maiF waaF jaL bpenM gaanM haiF singL khaawngR haiF ngernM haiF thaawngM
But its is making merit by donating, whether it be goods or money.
haiF aL raiM gaawF dtaamM dooyM theeF raoM maiF daiF wangR phohnR dtaawpL thaaenM
[We can] donate anything we want as long as we do not anticipate receiving any benefit in return.
baaepL neeH raoM riiakF waaF gaanM thamM boonM thamM thaanM naH khrapH
This is what is called making merit through charitable giving.
sohmR mootH waaF raoM deernM yuuL bohnM thaL nohnR yuuL laaeoH raoM henR sooL nakH sooL nakH gaaeL neuuayL haawpL
Suppose that we are travelling along and we see an old, tired, wheezing dog.
raoM ruuH seukL waaF manM khohngM jaL hiuR khaaoF maakF
We understand that it is probably very hungry.
raoM gaawF leeuyM bpaiM seuuH khaaoF seuuH naamH haiF manM ginM
So, we buy food and water for it to eat.
phaawM manM ginM imL raoM gaawF ruuH seukL meeM khwaamM sookL ruuH seukL haaepF bpeeF maakF
Once it was full, we felt pleased, [we] felt very happy.
baaepL niiaH kheuuM gaanM thamM thaanM theeF raoM ruuH seukL waaF raoM saL baaiM jaiM raoM maiF daiF khitH waaF raoM haiF pheuuaF aL raiM
This is the way in which we give charity that makes us feel comfortable; we don’t think about why we made the donation.
dtaaeL raoM khitH waaF raoM haiF laaeoH niiaF manM meeM khwaamM sookL manM imL khaaeF nanH gaawF phaawM naH khrapH
But, we consider that after we give some assistance, it is happy and is satisfied; that alone is enough.
waehM laaM theeF phohmR bpaiM dtaL laatL niiaF phohmR jaL henR khaawR thaanM yuuL yuhH yaeH maakF maaiM seungF khaawR thaanM niiaF jaL meeM khanR naamH
When I go to the market, I see lots of beggars holding water dippers.
laaeoH gaawF jaL dtaengL dtuaaM so:hmM meuuanR khohnM maiF daiF aapL naamH maaM laaiR wanM
And, [they] are dressed in filthy rags like someone who has not bathed in many days.
baangM khohnM aatL jaL nangF yuuL theeF pheuunH khookH khaoL phaH nohmM meuuM laaeoH gaawF khaawR ngernM raoM
Some of them are down on the ground kneeling with their hands held in a begging pose, asking us for money.
baangM khohnM aatL jaL theuuR gaawkH naamH khanR naamH naiM phaaM saaR khaawngR khohnM thaiM thaangM phaakF neuuaR deernM bpaiM deernM maaM
Some of them might walk back and forth, holding a ‘kok naam’ (a dipping bowl in Northern dialect).
waehM laaM theeF phohmR henR phuaakF khaoR laaeoH niiaF phohmR gaawF jaL yipL graL bpaoR dtangM aawkL maaM maiF daiF khitH aL raiM naH khrapH
When I see people like these, I pull out my change purse without thinking [without making any judgements].
laaeoH gaawF aoM meuuM luaangH lohngM bpaiM naiM riianR aatL jaL meeM sakL uuhrM sipL baatL yeeF sipL baatL thaoF raiL maiF ruuH laeL gaawF saiL bpaiM maiF daiF napH duayF
Then, [I] fish around for some loose change; maybe I have, oh say, 10 or 20 baht; whatever I have, I put in without counting it.
laaeoH phaawM raoM haiF khaoR bpaiM laaeoH niiaF khaoR gaawF jaL phuutF bpraL maanM waaF khaawR haiF raoM cho:hkF deeM khaawR haiF raoM baaepL jaehM rinM roongF reuuangM aL raiM gaawF waaF bpaiM
And, once I have given him [the money], he says something like, ‘Best of luck to you; may you be successful’ or something similar.
phohmR gaawF ruuH seukL saL baaiM jaiM waaF uuhrM phohmR daiF chuayF phuaakF khaoR
I felt good that that I helped them.
haiF yaangL naawyH niiaF gaawF meeM khaaoF ginM naiM wanM neeH laeL naH khrapH
Giving at least allows them to eat for at least one day.
khohnM thaiM suaanL yaiL jaL bpenM khohnM theeF kheeF sohngR saanR phrawH waaF dtaawnM dekL niiaF raoM thuukL bpluukL fangR haiF dtawngF chuayF leuuaR phuuF euunL baengL bpanM phuuF euunL bpenM khohnM meeM namH jaiM o:hpL aawmF aaM reeM
Thai people generally are sympathetic people because when we are young we are inculcated with the spirit of helping others, of sharing with others, and of being generous.
waehM laaM theeF raoM henR khraiM deuuatL raawnH niiaF raoM gaawF jaL chuayF
When we see someone who is having difficulty, we help him.
aatL jaL bpenM gaanM chuayF dooyM gaanM haiF ngernM haiF thaawngM haiF yeuumM ngernM naH khrapH
Such help may come in the form of giving money, things of value, or lending them funds.
gaanM chuayF leuuaR baaepL neeH raoM gaawF riiakF waaF gaanM thamM thaanM meuuanR ganM naH khrapH
Assistance of this sort we also call ‘giving charity’.
gaanM thamM thaanM eekL yaangL neungL theeF chaaoM phootH makH jaL thamM ganM naiM dtaawnM chaaoH gaawF kheuuM gaanM saiL baatL
Another form of charity that Buddhists engage in is giving alms to monks in the morning.
gaanM saiL baatL kheuuM gaanM thaL waaiR aaM haanR haiF phraH
Giving alms is making donations of food into a monk’s [bowl].
raoM aatL jaL dtriiamM aaM haanR waiH dtangF dtaaeL meuuaF kheuunM laaeoH phaawM dtaawnM chaaoH raoM gaawF aoM aaM haanR nanH maaM oonL saiL thoongR aoM waiH
We can prepare the fool the night before, then we can warm up the food in the morning and put [the food] into plastic bags.
aatL jaL meeM gapL sipL yaangL khaaoF sipL yaangL naamH sipL khuaatL
[We] might have ten bags of food, ten bags of rice, and ten bottles of water.
laaeoH phaawM dtaawnM chaaoH niiaF raoM gaawF jaL aoM dtoH maaM dtangF theeF naaF baanF
Then, in the morning, we set up a table in front of our home.
phraH gaawF jaL deernM phaanL naaF baanF raoM
The monks walk by our home.
raoM gaawF aoM khaawngR theeF raoM dtriiamM aoM waiH niiaF saiL bpaiM theeF baatL laaeoH phraH gaawF jaL uayM phaawnM raoM bpenM bohtL suaatL
We take the things we prepared and place them in the monks’ bowls; the monks then bless us with a prayer.
dtaaeL thaaF geertL waaF baangM khohnM maiF meeM waehM laaM dtriiamM aaM haanR naiM dtaawnM glaangM kheuunM naH khrapH raoM gaawF aatL jaL dteuunL chaaoH naawyL sakL dteeM haaF dteeM haaF khreungF
But, if it so happens that we don’t have the time to prepare the food the night before, we can wake up early, about five or five thirty [in the morning].
laaeoH raoM gaawF bpaiM dtaL laatL bpaiM seuuH khaawngR seuuH aaM haanR seuuH naamH seuuH phohnR laH maaiH dtriiamM aoM waiH
Then, we would go to the market and buy some stuff; [we’d] buy food, water, [and] fruit and get it all ready.
laaeoH phaawM dtaawnM chaaoH phraH gaawF jaL deernM maaM theeF dtaL laatL raoM gaawF thaL waaiR aaM haanR haiF gapL thanF
So, in the morning, when the monks walk to the market, we would give them the food [that we purchased].
thaaF raoM yaakL jaL saiL baatL dtaaeL waaF raoM bpenM khohnM theeF dteuunL saaiR jaL thamM yangM ngaiM deeM
What should [you] do if [you] want to give food to the monks but [you] wake up late?
anM neeH khaawR haiF saaiR yaaL geernM thiiangF laaeoH ganM naH khrapH phrawH waaF bpaL gaL dtiL laaeoH niiaF phraH jaL thaanM aaM haanR khaaeF saawngR meuuH kheuuM dtaawnM chaaoH gapL gaawnL thiiangF
If this happens, please do not give food to the monks later than noon because usually the monks eat only two meals a day, in the morning and before noon.
thaaF dtaawnM yenM bpaiM laaeoH niiaF phraH jaL maiF chanR aaM haanR laaeoH naH khrapH
If it is already evening, the monks will not eat anymore.
dangM nanH raoM aatL jaL bpaiM sakL sipL etL mo:hngM dtriiamM aaM haanR bpaiM haiF riiapF raawyH naH khrapH
Therefore, we should go about 11:00 am and have the food already prepared for them.
reuuR maiF thaaF raoM bpaiM saaiR gwaaL thiiangF raoM aatL jaL bpliianL jaakL aaM haanR bpaiM bpenM singL khaawngR gaawF daiF chenF nangR seuuR thamM maH uuhrM chaaemM phuuM saL phohmR meetF go:hnM dtaangL
Alternatively, if we go later than noon, we might give them something useful, rather than food, for example, books about Buddhism, or say, shampoo or razors.
thaL waaiR singL khaawngR theeF raoM khitH waaF phraH jamM bpenM dtawngF chaiH naH khrapH
[We would] give them things that we think are necessary for monks to use.
gaanM theeF raoM thamM thaanM bpenM bpraL jamM niiaF jaL thamM haiF raoM bpenM khohnM theeF meeM namH jaiM gapL phuuF euunL bpenM khohnM theeF meeM jitL jaiM baawM riH sootL jitL jaiM theeF saL aatL bpenM khohnM theeF chaawpF chuayF leuuaR phuuF euunL
Doing these charitable deeds on a regular basis will cause us to become someone who is generous toward others, who has purity and cleanliness of spirit, a person who is enjoys helping others.
waehM laaM theeF raoM deuuatL raawnH raoM jamM bpenM dtawngF gaanM khwaamM chuayF leuuaR niiaF gaawF jaL meeM khohnM maaM dtaawpL thaaenM raoM maaM chuayF leuuaR raoM dtaL laawtL waehM laaM
When we are in trouble, [when] we need help, there will be someone to pay us back, to always be there to help us.
dangM nanH raoM khuaanM theeF jaL manL thamM thaanM bpenM bpraL jamM naH khrapH
Therefore, we should always be diligent in giving charity to others.
